HIV / AIDS

Infectious diseases

Name: HIV / AIDS

Year: 1981 – in progress

Dead: 32 million (2018)

HIV infection was declared a pandemic in 1981, after having managed to separate the symptoms of the pathology in question from those of the diseases linked to it.

Since 1996 a series of antiviral drugs, used in therapy under the name of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, has been able to block the development of the virus in individuals, but not to eradicate it, this implies a chronicization of the infection.

Today, patients well covered by therapy cannot transmit the virus. The virus, if not detectable in the blood, is not transmissible. Hence the singla U = U, Undetectable = Untrasmittable.

Human immunodeficiency viruses, Lentivirus human immunodeficiency virus 1 and 2, are two species of Lentivirus that cause an infection, which if not treated in time, causes the acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

AIDS, usually transmitted during sexual intercourse, causes a weakening of the immune system which could lead, in more serious cases, to opportunistic infections or cancer.
